How A Continuous Rendering System Works
Continuous rendering is an important way to productively repurpose the by-products of commercial food preparation. The meat industry only utilizes about 50-65% of cows, pigs, and chickens, and rendering is a safe way to convert the unused parts into high-quality feed and protein supplements for livestock. Each year, the rendering industry keeps over 60 billion pounds of animal waste out of landfills, and repurposes over 2.5 billion pounds of grease and used cooking oil!

Temporary storage-The raw material is placed in raw material bins, and is then conveyed from the bins by a raw material conveyor, where a magnet removes metal contaminants.
Hammering and grinding-A hammermill pulverizes large materials into smaller ones,and then a raw material grinder reduces the materials into uniform particles for material handling and improved heat transfer during cooking.
Cooking-The cooker is heated by boiler steam. which brings the raw material to a temperature between 250 and 280 degrees Fahrenheit. This evaporates moisture from the materials, and separates fat from protein and bone. A dehydrated slurry of fat and solids is then discharged from the cooker at a controlled rate for the next step.
Discharge and settling-The discharged slurry is transported to a drainer conveyor which separates liquid fat from the solids, before the material is sent to the discharge conveyor and screw presses, which reduce the solids’ fat content to about 10 to 12 percent. Solids that bypass the screw presses are recycled back to the cooker. The material is then transported to the settling tank, where the heavier bone and protein particles settle to the bottom, where they are discharged by screw conveyor into the discharge conveyor. Liquid fat from the settling tank is pumped to the centrifuge, which removes residual solid impurities from the fat.
